Lucy Stone marries Henry Blackwell in West Brookfield.
May 1, 1855
The ceremony is officiated by Rev. Thomas Wentworth Higginson in the Stone family farmhouse. Passages read in the ceremony include: “We believe that personal independence and equal human rights can never be forfeited. . . that marriage should be an equal and permanent partnership. . . that until it is so recognized, married partners should provide against the radical injustice of present laws, by every means in their power . . .” Stone initially adopts her husband’s name, but reverts to using her maiden name about a year later.
